WELSH FILMMAKER HOSTS WORLDWIDE PREMIER IN LLANELLI

“Freetown – Hope Restored” debuts 16 September, 2009

Charlotte, NC – The premiere of the inaugural documentary of Welsh filmmaker, James Chapman, will take place on Wednesday, 16 September at the historic Zion Chapel, Park Street, Llanelli, South Wales. The film, “Freetown – Hope Restored,” chronicles the poignant story of war-torn Sierra Leone, a country devastated by years of civil war, which resulted in massive poverty, unemployment, and suffering.

The documentary is the result of weeks Chapman spent in Sierra Leone and the U.S. He was in Freetown to film a crusade of Ben Cerullo Ministries, which was held March 4-8, 2009. “We saw conditions that were almost beyond belief,” Chapman said, “I witnessed firsthand the plight of this city and its people. My burden and vision for this project grew as Ben and the others on our team interacted with local residents. We heard testimonies and talked to people from all walks of life. We were compelled to tell the world about Sierra Leone and the human tragedy perpetrated upon this nation.”

“As my first documentary, I had many choices to make. I wanted to capture the raw emotion and spiritual desolation that has emerged in the aftermath of great atrocities.  Yet, the amazing thing is that the citizens of Sierra Leone have not given up. The overwhelming message of this film is hope! The people of Wales will have the opportunity to see the film for themselves and I am certain they will be deeply moved.”

The premiere on 16 September is co-sponsored by Ben Cerullo Ministries and Myrtle House, a local Elim congregation pastored by Bill Chapman, James’ father.  The Elim movement comprises over 600 congregations in the UK as well as churches in forty countries around the world.

Chapman has been working with U.S. based Ben Cerullo Ministries since 2008.  “Early last year, out of the blue, I got a call from someone on Ben’s team about helping with a photography need in the UK,” recalls James.  “They had visited my website and liked my work.  We met in London and hit it off immediately.  Ben continued contracting me for various events.”

After travelling to Mexico, Peru and Brazil as the team photographer, James was asked to spearhead the Sierra Leone project.  In addition, James became a regular on the reality television series, THUNDER ROAD, which airs weekly on Inspiration Network International (INI-Sky channel 587).

“It’s really exciting.  Here I was, this little-known Wales photographer, suddenly living my dream.  I was taking pictures of people and places all over the world and became a cast member of a reality show that airs in 127 countries! But I believe that even greater things are to come.”
